Posted by Manish Dhanwani as FACULTIES sspeak on BMM!!
Prof . Anand Deshpande
Ex Cordinator
Rizvi College
Q1) Sir, for how long have you been coordinating and teaching?
I have been as a BMM as well as a BMM coordinator for 4 years now. It has been a very fulfilling career and I have enjoyed every moment of it
Q.2) Sir were you in the teaching profession always or also in the corporate world?
I was there in the corporate world and mostly in the field of Human Resource. Teaching was my hobby always. I started teaching in the year of 2000, and then resorted to taking it as a full time profession since 2002-2003
Q2) What is the role that a coordinator?
The coordinator has to mainly see to it that he coordinates with the faculties schedules proper lectures. At the same time he also has to see to it that he also brings in innovative methods of teaching that excites students
Q.3) What made you shift your focus to BMM?
As a person, was always interested in creativity and I personally had a flair for MEDIA. I was always fond of creative assignments and it was my passion as well. I wanted to do justice to my innate qualities.
Q.4) Have you authored any books?
Yes, I have. Some of my very good works include Principles of Management by R.L Lalwaniwhich comes quite handy for students in SYBMM as well as some illustrations are used in FYBMS as well.
Q.5) How is the quality of students in general that you have observed in BMM? Also how do you find BMM as a degree course?
Well, the students are admitted into the course following a proper criterion. So, one could say that the field is a highly competitive one as majority of the people get a chance to follow their passion. But at the same time, a few of the disinterested students also get in because they don’t manage to get into the field of their own choice like ENGINEERING,BMS and they land up doing BMM and obviously if one does not have a flair for things he does, he is bound not to make it BIG in that field
Q.6) Tell us something about RIZVI’s infrastructure regarding BMM?
We have a very good infrastructure and also we are developing more to benefit our dear students. We have Fully Air-conditioned Classrooms, a good faculty base. Also we have SLR cameras that help our students to make short movies and documentaries which are a part of this course. Also we have state of the art Computer Lab, Library and internet service
Q.7) Could you tell us something more about faculties at RIZVI?
We have a good mix of faculties, both visiting as well as in-house full time. For Eg: We have Prof. Ravindranath who is a visting faculty and has got vast experience in the field of journalism. He is the press advisor to Govt of Maharashtra. We have 3-5 full time faculties as well as 7-8 visiting faculties every year in the campus. Visiting faculties come fro various streams of Media like Reporting, Photography, Public Opinion, etc…
Q.8) Why did you leave as a coordinator?
This year the coordinator would be Mr. Fulkant Sheikh. I left coordination so as I could join teaching for which I always had a keen interest in. I want to be with my students more and more. I want to be accessible to them whenever they need help. When I was the coordinator most of my time was lost in coordinating and administrative work because of which I was not able to connect with my students.
Q.9) Does Rizvi BMM section offer placements?
Yes, we have a common PLACEMENT CELL that strives towards achieving placements for all courses and Prof Rajeshwari is in charge for the same. The placement cell also looks after providing students with summer internships.
Q.10) What are the avenues after BMM for students?
After BMM, a student can make his career in either ADVERTISING or JOURNALISM, depending on what he has opted for in the 3rd year as the mode of specialization. Journalism has better prospects than advertising. Students normally do not get a chance to get into the field of COPYWRITING after BMM. 1/100 students get a chance to get into copywriting and that too as a trainee. But Copywriting is definitely a Lucrative Career. Most of the students land up doing generalized jobs in the field of CLIENT SERVICING in AD AGENCIES.
Journalism has to offer careers like drafting, editing, asst editor, news reading , but still only 110/60 people on an average go in for journalism as their career option.
Q.11) what are your future plans?
I want to still explore the field of BMM more into depth and gain complete understanding of the same. I want do more Research oriented things in BMM. Be more with students and write some more books in the respective field of BMM.
I want to make better media people!!
