hi guys,
Welcome to this dillemma……After BMM????
well, now that you have finished your BMM you might be wondering whats next on the cards….
SHOULD I Work? Should I do an MBA? Should i Do a PG course in JOURNALISM?
Well relax and read further………
If you have done your 3rd year Specialization in advertising, then :
1. I would advice you to join an AD agency and start working….Climb a couple of ladders and then check out your prospects within a year.
2. There are people who make it big even without further studies as well as vice versa kinds also exist.
3. Work in an AD agency where you get quality work and profile as this eases the road ahead even if you want to work or do further studies.
4. If you want to do further studies strictly a PG course in advertising, then do it from a class of MICA coz rest are all at the same level. They will give you placements but not the edge that you wwant to move ahead.
5. You can opt for MBA in marketing for 2 years as this increases your scope and you dont only get restricted to the field of ADVERTISING..With this you can get yourself open in the world of Advertising and Marketing
If you HAve Done Journalism in the 3rd year
1. Then opt for further studies in the list of Journalism colleges uploaded on the site….
2. You might consider yourself to gain some work ex bu doing FREELANCING…It really helps
3. There is no point doing an MBA and then getting into this field as an MBA will infact decrese the value or make you stagnant in this indutry
4. Do a PG course in JOURNALISM from Times Media School and get yourself placed in to TOI and watch yourself grow…
5. You Might consider doing a course in ANCHORING or NEEWS Reading as it is the flavour of the day.
Please do leave your comments and queries and i shall be more than happy to help…..

2See if you dont want to shift focus from MEDIA, then i will advice you not to do MA in Psychology….
again PSYCHOLOGY is a very growing field in the world of advertising to understand CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR….
In media also, Psychologists are requires but then not very much….
My advice to you would be rather than goin for MA in psychology, go for a PG course in ADVTG or PR from a reputed college which gives you a more noteable edge in the world of MEDIA…
Do leave your COMMENTS and let me know your feedback on the answer….I shall be happy to help you with more doubts

3Which one is better among Jai Hind and Wilson?
Manish Dhanwani
June 12th, 2009 at 6:16 am
4well a tricky question though……
I would recommend WILSON because it has great faculties as well as it is renowned for its BMM course and counted as one of the best in town for BMM…………….
JAI HIND is coming of age but the quality of teaching —-WELL WILSON is the place for you then…..
Do leave more comments and queries…
am always happy to help

9hey what about sports journalism? how 2 go forward in this field?
Manish Dhanwani
June 14th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
10This is a highly creative field for those professionals who love to write, visualize, design, edit and work in publishing and production units for sports journalism, both audio and video.
Much more is involved in sports and games these days than who won, who lost and why. Complex questions involve the sociology, the psychology and the business of sport, and perhaps more importantly, the ethics of sport. …This is how the concept of SPORTS journalism has come to the forefront…
You mist first try to get yourself in through some experience in this field…This is a specialised field inside journalism. So make sure that you back yourself up with some quality experience….Join a website and get yourself associated with them…Search for magazine freelancing as this would help you make a good social network..E.g WISDEN does offer freelancing and some good quality internships….Make sure you go for quality work rather than money as it will definitely fetch you returns in the long run…..Join some websites like isport.in or cricinfo as these are good websites that focus on the sporting arena….
A sports journalist may perform the following tasks:
attend sporting matches, games and events and write sports stories and/or match reports
undertake research to provide background information for articles
assess the suitability of reports and articles for publication or broadcasting, within an established style and format, and edit as necessary
write articles that comment on or interpret news events, and that may put forward a point of view on behalf of the publication/broadcasting agency
comment on television/radio (in the broadcasting industry) work with a sports photographer to report on games and events liaise with all sorts of people, particularly those in the media business.
Few institutes offering sports journalism in india are:
Alagappa University, Karaikudi, Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media, Bangalore…….
If you need any more info….do lemme know and i shall revert back with more authentic research…
Keep Posting!!

11Well, A lot of institutes do offer good couses in PR…But sir, i have a couple of colleagues who have done PR from UK, Australia and Canada and are earning 12k-15 k per month after such a heavy investment …….So i would rather advice you to go for PR in INDIA and yes EMDI is certainly a very good option and does offer good quality INTERNSHIPS as well…Also there is NIEM but EMDI is certainly the talk of the town…
All the BEST

June 15th, 2009 at 9:06 am
12well journalism does not actually have some specific certificates that they consider…but yes doing courses in JOURNALISM is advisable to get to the top notch of the league….Also as many people do, BRAND name hungry is not the hour of the day..But getting good meaningful profiles and work ex will matter and then you should consider joining the BIG channels…You must play a different game and work your ways…Try things now rather than tooo late….
Do keep posting for more queries on BMM or MEdia as a whole…..
happy to HELp!!!!

13Can you tell me what is the future prospect in the field of Public Relations and is there such a subject taught in any B school?
Manish Dhanwani
June 16th, 2009 at 9:00 am
14hi kaustubh,
Public relations is a very good field to be in,,,But again you have to get your hands dirty ….
The PR subject as a whole is mostly done as PG course, but the same is also taught as a subject in BMM …..
And some B Schools PG course in marketing as a whole have also introduced this subjecct…
Future prospects of PR well are very good because PR as a field is growing in every way…Every business requires it these days…It is like a catalyst that helps BUSINESS grow

15Hi i wanna pursue a career in copywriting…….kindly temme what r d opportunities for me aftr BMM as i have heard that most of the ad agencies prefer experienced people….n how is d pay structure for an apprentice Copywriter??
Manish Dhanwani
June 16th, 2009 at 9:47 am
16hi Neha,
thats exactly the question and doubts that many people have raised and i will definitely get some experienced people to comment on it….
Well it is right that agencies prefer experienced people rather than Freshers…But yes….there are agencies that encourage freshers and first give them trianing…To groom them well and then if you have it in you, you get going or else..BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME….
The answer is simple….If you have it in you, Then prove it….
The Pay is very less..you could expect a stipend and nothing more for an apprentice copywriter…
I hope i have solved your doubts
Keep Psoting your doubts and I shall always help

18hi manish, thnz alot for ur guidance……actually m plannin to do ma in eng lit and job as well………just done wid bmm in advertising….
actually i really wanna study but pg diploma in ad is way expernsive ya……i dnt have 3lacs to spend on a diploma like met or emdi, it seems d value is also quite low……that just taken dis decision to work n do my ma in eng lit……..
wht to do ya?????????????
Manish Dhanwani
June 19th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
19Hi rasz,
Great to see that you value money…..It’s a good decision not to take a course From MET or EMDI….
Do english Literature only if you have an interest or only if you want to go abroad for further studies…..
What i would do , judging from the comments in your post…is that do work now in an ad agency…..There are many reputed colleges like XAVIERS (CHURCHGATE), MICA(ahmedabad) that offer PG courses which are a year long…Also just inquire that MICA has some correspondence course as well that is of great value….
Let me know the course and i shall guide you further on it….
Also another option worth considering would be an EXECUTIVE MBA in MARKETING after a couple of years of work ex….
Doing a PG in advertising itself would restrict you till ADVERTISING, but after doing a degree in MKTG, you can always have better options open for you not only in the ad world but also in branding, product development and other related fields….
Dont waste 3 lacs for something that has no value attached to it….
So, be in touch and ddo let me know your decision….
Regards,

20Hi Manish,
I have finished with my 12th and am planning to get into BMM and take advertising as my main subject in the final year……..is it a good choice? What would be my pay package approx. if i do only till BMM “and” what would be my pay package approx. if i do a PG in advertising after dat?
IS MARKETING A BETTER OPTION IN TERMS OF PAY PACKAGES AS OF TODAY?????
Manish Dhanwani
June 23rd, 2009 at 5:54 am
21hi aakash,
Nice to see that you are striving for the best!!
See, the pay package entirely depends on your capability as an individual and also the college that you get into….
But if you do only BMM and work, then you will start at a very low pay like 9k-10k per month..Mostly BMM grads get a chance to work in the MEDIA PLANNING DEPARTMENT and few get into CLIENT SERVICING and COPYWRITING…..
Also, i have a friend who has joined LINTAS after BMM and is doing well there…Her pay is 25 k per month!!
Pay only comes after proving your worth as an INDIVIDUAL and this AD Worl will always reward YOU then….
And PG IN ADVTG will restrict yourself only to the field of advertising whereas MARKETING definitely betters your career SCOPE, GROWTH and Options!!
Even After doing MKTG you have a chance even in the CORPORATE world and also you can get into AD WORLD but things normaly do not happen VICE VERSA!!
Which College did you get through?
Keep Me updated about youyr progress!!

22heyy manish…….thanks a “lot” for the info. This has solved more than half of my doubts…………………I AM REALLY GRATEFUL TO YOU
Actually i didn’t finish my 12th yet…….in fact my boards will be next year(2010) and i’ll be passing through “WELHAM BOYS’ SCHOOL”-DEHRADUN (CBSE).
But obviously, as u would understand i am very inquisitive and worried about my career, so i have started to plan from now itself.
Could u please tell me what % would i have to get in 12th to get into XAVIERS OR JAI HIND OR NATIONALS (I am from the commerce stream)?? Actually i am asking this especially bcoz i will be giving my boards from CBSE and not HSC.
Also, could u plzzz tell me dat if i do a PG in marketing as u advised and i come out from a good college and also i prove to be a good student and all dat stuff……what “could” be the pay package? Basically my question is:- What is the minimum possible and maximum possible pay package after PG in marketing???
Also could u throw some light on MBA in marketing??

31Hey,
I’m in my TY BMM and i’ve taken up advertising. Well in your article you advised to take up a job in an AD agency after the TY. But the problem is that i don’t really know what type of job should i do, because i dont want to do client servicing, and i’m not that great at copy writing. I’m very much interested in art direction though. So, what exactly should i do in order to do art direction?
Another question that i wanted to ask is that are the subjects offered in the PG courses in Advertising have the same thing taught in the BMM course or is it more on an advanced level? Is it adviceable to do PG in Advertising and PR from KC college? Can you suggest me some colleges where i can do my PG?
I’ll be waiting for your reply.. Thank you..

32Hi Priya,
Well yes you ae on the right track..Better to do Masters rather than PG in journalism…And yes work ex is really a distinguishing factor in Masters ..
Dont worry , great going!!

July 14th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
33Hi Pranali,
Click on this link tto know more about art direction http://bmm.managementparadise.com/?p=172
Also its very tough to get into art direction staright after BMM….But try in ad agencies at a smaller level and you can get through
the subjeccts covered in PG Advtg are very much at the same level …Its only the name that matters
You will get to learn more about PR in detail if you opt for PR sstudies…
First you will have to channelise your interest and then you should opt for studies…
Lemme know and I shall help you better
